Lia Ghilardi
Her background is in urban sociology (Trento University, Italy); she has an MA with Distinction in Arts Criticism from City University (London) and a Diploma in Creative Thinking Skills from the De Bono Seminars Programme (Malta). Internationally recognised as a leader in the field of cultural planning, Lia has, over the past fifteen years, built up an extensive portfolio of cultural and place mapping project both in the UK and Europe.A creative polymath, Lia Ghilardi is the founder and director of Noema Research and Planning, a UK-based organization working internationally to deliver place mapping and strategic cultural planning projects. Internationally recognized as a leader in the field of cultural urban scene development, Lia has worked for more than twenty years with civic leaders, urban networks and arts organisations to provide creative and integrated solutions to the challenges of place making in contemporary cities.
Recently she joined the Mayor of London's new special advisory group on culture and development. At City University, London, she leads the Cultural Planning module as part of the MA in Culture, Policy and Management. She is a member of the Academy of Urbanism, a network of influential thinkers, professionals and decision makers passionate about a better living for people in towns and cities.

In her speech she will use this quote by American urbanist Jane Jacobs to talk about how, in order to be sustainable, progressive, and livable, the cities of the future will need to adopt new tools for urban development, which could involve doing ‘cultural acupuncture’ interventions together with open source, collaborative forms of urbanism.
